Clapton Common guided tour of present and past heritage at risk

Clapton Common is one of Hackney's most important green spaces and a designated conservation area. Around its edges stand a number of historic buildings, some listed for being of national significance and others of recognised local importance. Several of the buildings are recurrent entries in the national Heritage at Risk Register produced annually by Historic England, as a result of long-term structural or maintenance issues.

On this tour, co-led by Julia Lafferty, a tireless campaigner for Clapton's built heritage, and Rob Briggs, Chair of the Hackney Society's Buildings at Risk Group, you will hear the stories of Clapton Common's current Heritage at Risk Register entries, as well as other local heritage assets that have also suffered damage or destruction.

We will also look at some instances of historic buildings that have been rescued and brought back to life in the 21st century, to show there is ample reason for hope that better futures are possible for their currently at-risk counterparts.

The tour will begin at 11.15am outside St Thomas' Church, 1 Clapton Terrace E5 9BW. The route will be entirely on metalled pavements and paths. It will finish around 12.30pm at Springfield Park Cafe (E5 9EF)
