Beginner’s Guide to Hapé
Beloved Community, As we gather in sacred circle, we open our hearts to the spirit of
Hapé. This medicine has been carried through the Amazon by wisdom keepers and
ancestors, gifted to us as a tool for grounding, cleansing, and remembrance. When
we sit with Hapé, we do so with reverence, as one family breathing together with
Pachamama, the Great Spirit, and all of Creation.
■ What is Hapé?
Hapé (pronounced ha-peh) is a sacred Amazonian plant medicine made from finely ground tobacco
(mapacho) and other medicinal herbs. It is a bridge to Spirit, supporting clarity, focus, and a deeper
sense of connection to the Earth and our inner being.
■ How is it offered?
Hapé is offered through a special pipe (Tepi or Kuripe). The medicine is gently blown into each nostril,
symbolizing the breath of life entering our body. In this exchange, we receive not only the medicine but
also the prayers carried within it.
■ What You May Experience
• A deep sense of peace, calm, and focus • Emotional release and lightness • Cleansing of the mind,
body, and spirit (tears, runny nose, even light purging) • A greater connection to yourself, your prayers,
and the circle
■ Guidance for First-Timers
• Come with an open heart and a clear intention (clarity, release, grounding, vision) • Breathe deeply
and surrender trust the wisdom of the medicine • Allow any tears, yawns, or releases they are signs
of cleansing • Stay seated and present, feeling the support of the circle • Bring water, tissues, and your
prayer
■ Safety & Sacred Respect
• Hapé is to be received with gratitude and respect, it is medicine, not a substance • Not recommended
during pregnancy or for those with serious heart or lung conditions • Always sit with trained guides who
can hold the ceremonial container • Remember, you are not alone, the circle and ancestors hold you
■ Closing Reminder
Each experience with Hapé is unique. Trust what arises. Surrender to the process of grounding,
clearing, and aligning. As one family, we honor the spirit of the medicine and the prayers it awakens in
US. Together, we breathe. Together, we heal.
