VOICES OF EXPERIENCE: K-POP DANCE Workshop

Join us, artist Anne Kim, and dancer and choreographer Diego Lopez on Tuesday, July 2nd, 2024 from 3:00 - 4:15 PM for a K-POP dance workshop presented within the context of the exhibition VOICES OF EXPERIENCE.

The rise of K-pop (Korean pop) began in the 1990s with the Korean Wave, also referred to as “Hallyu,” which encompasses Korean television dramas, movies, fashion, K-beauty, and more. K-pop is much more than just a music genre; it is renowned for its intricate and high-energy choreography, which often incorporates elements from various dance genres such as hip-hop, contemporary, and street dance. This focus on dance has led to viral dance challenges on social media platforms, engaging a wide audience and inviting fans to participate by learning and sharing these dance routines.

Diego Lopez is an LA based dancer and choreographer hailing from Chihuahua, Mexico. He earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts in Dance from the USC Glorya Kaufman School of Dance. During his time at USC, Diego discovered a passion for fostering dance communities. He served as the Artistic Director for USC’s Hip-Hop Competitive Team, Chaotic 3, and founded Kraze, USC’s first K-Pop choreographic and training team. His commitment to building inclusive dance spaces led him to create the SCDC (USC Dance Community), a platform designed to provide resources to support all dance organizations at USC.
Looking to the future, Diego aspires to dive into the K-Pop entertainment industry, with the goal of becoming a choreographer and artistic director.

ABOUT VOICES OF EXPERIENCE:
Developed and curated by Los Angeles-based artist Anne Kim, "Voices of Experience" is an intergenerational and multilingual interdisciplinary project that aims to amplify the rich narratives of community elders residing near the Goethe-Institut in MacArthur Park. Selected from this vibrant community, four elders: Cathy Yi, Fransisca Santiago Carranza, Sabina Guzman, and Yang Ja Kim, will participate in a collaborative choreographic process. The culmination of this endeavor will be a storytelling exhibition at the Goethe-Institut Los Angeles Project space that integrates film, dance, audio, and visual arts. “Voices of Experience” includes special live performances, workshops, and features photographs and video interviews from KYCC’s Koreatown Storytelling Program, offering a compelling exploration of our elders’ diverse experiences and perspectives.
