Did you know?! Vizcaya first opened its doors as a private residence on Christmas Day 1916 and we celebrate by decorating the Main House as it might have been over 100 years ago.
SEE | The Main House will be decorated for the season as might have been done 100 years ago, including garland strung from the balconies and inside the Courtyard. The Dining Room table set for entertaining. And an old-timey Christmas tree decorated in the East Loggia.
Intend | Come experience the creation of a Sacred Sand Mandala, one of the most profound practices in Tibetan Buddhism. Each sand mandala represents the architectural layout of the entire palace of a specific deity - in this case, Green Tara which represents compassion. Sand Mandalas take the monks 4-6 days to create and when they are finished, the mandala is consecrated, the power of the blessing is released, and then, the sand is swept up and brought to a flowing body of water to continue to bless the beings there and purify the environment.
MAKE | Storytelling through Beadwork with Briana Chrispin. Through prayerful intention and creativity, this art form is a indigenous ceremonial practice by taking the whispers of the body and spirit, translating this into form through beads of various materials such as shells, seeds, stone and wood. Tying together each piece on a string is representative of a collective of stories.
LEARN | You’ll have the opportunity to learn more about the history of the estate and explore the illuminated formal gardens.
CRAFT | Drop in to the Vizcaya artmaking station and take part in a winter tradition that dates back to the Middle Ages. A Vizcaya educator will give you all the materials and instruction for making a citrus pomander that you can take home to add a cheerful aroma to your winter traditions.
WATCH | Artists from Brevo Theater perform excertps from Black Nativity, an African-American telling of the Nativity story, based on the Song Play written by acclaimed African-American poet and playwright Langston Hughes. The show recreates the journey of Mary and Joseph, resplendent in African costumes, to Bethlehem, accompanied by a rousing repertoire of spirituals. The combined African-American viewpoint and gospel music make Black Nativity a truly unique and entertaining theatrical experience.
