After the interval, the emotional depth continues with Edward Elgar’s Serenade for Strings — music of warmth and nobility — alongside the dazzling fireworks of Camille Saint-Saëns’ Introduction et Tarantella and the deeply moving Adagio for Strings by Guillaume Lekeu.
🎻 Patrick Rafter
Recognised as one of Ireland’s leading classical musicians, Patrick Rafter performs internationally as soloist and director across Europe, the Middle East, South America and Asia. A protégé of Maxim Vengerov, he has appeared with major orchestras including the RTÉ Concert Orchestra, Prague Philharmonia, Kiev Solists and the National Symphony Orchestra of Ireland. ✨ Luminosa String Orchestra
Founded in 2018 by executive director Lucy Hayward O’Leary and cellist Nicola Geddes, Luminosa has quickly built a reputation for artistic excellence with acclaimed performances. Led by Paul Ezergailis, Concertmaster of the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra, the orchestra’s section leaders include members of the acclaimed ConTempo Quartet, alongside many of Ireland’s finest string players.
The name Luminosa — meaning “brilliant light” in Italian — reflects the exceptional professional musicians living and working in Galway. Renowned for imaginative programming, the orchestra pairs pillars of the string repertoire with lesser-known gems and works by Irish composers, bringing freshness and vitality to every performance. They regularly commission new Irish works and curate themed programmes that resonate deeply with audiences.
