Haggerston School visit

Saturday 28th February 2026, 10:15 for 10:30 am

Members booking from 3rd February

Guests booking from 10th February

We have been invited to a visit and tour of Haggerston School, designed and built (1964-67) as Haggerston Girls’ Secondary School by the celebrated modernist architect Ernö Goldfinger. Built in a brutalist style using brickwork, timber, glass and concrete, Pevsner’s Buildings of England thinks it to be “outstanding among schools of its period … whose good proportions and careful details replay examination”. It is Grade II listed.

Ernö Goldfinger (1902-87) was born in Budapest, and lived in Vienna and Paris, where he studied architecture under Auguste Perret, one of the first architects to develop the use of reinforced concrete aesthetically. Goldfinger moved to the UK in the 1930’s and became a key member of the Modernist movement in architecture and design.

A major refurbishment of the school by Avanti Architects was completed in 2012. This included a re-modelling of the main teaching block and a new art, design and technology block. It received a commendation from the 2012 Hackney Design Awards.

Haggerston School is now an Academy after joining The Community Schools Trust in September 2023. The Trust is looking to use the building and its rich history to enhance education for its students in the future.

For the tour of the school, there are lifts available but most of the features are on the ground floor, with a few on the top floor.

The school’s entrance is at Weymouth Terrace, London E2 8LS. Please arrive from 10:15 for a 10:30 start.

The visit will last about 2 hours

The event costs £5 for Hackney Society members (£6.13 with booking fees) and £10 for guests (£11.55 with booking fees).

Booking opens for Hackney Society members on 3rd February, and for guests/non-members on 10th February.

Please book in advance using this page, and remember to bring your tickets. Thanks!
