The year 2023 marked the 150th anniversary of the founding of the New Zealand Clothing Factory by Hallenstein Brothers.
Bendix Hallenstein, an entrepreneur with a vision for success, recognised the burgeoning potential of the clothing market in early New Zealand. His keen business acumen and commitment to excellence laid the foundation for what would become one of the country’s most enduring retail brands.
With business success came great prosperity for the Hallensteins and their descendants. The family became known for their sense of social responsibility, community-mindedness and generosity. The philanthropic endeavours of the extended Hallenstein family have left an indelible mark on Dunedin’s cultural landscape. Through their generous contributions, the names Fels, de Beer, Theomin, Brasch and Halsted have become synonymous with the support and enrichment of various cultural institutions in the city.
Under Bendix’s astute leadership, the New Zealand Clothing Factory flourished. The company quickly gained a reputation for its superior craftsmanship, attention to detail and good design. As demand grew, Bendix expanded his operations, establishing stores in various locations throughout New Zealand.
In October 2023 Ōtepoti's renowned cultural institutions came together to create a city-wide activation to celebrate the enduring philanthropic legacy of the extended Hallenstein family. It consisted of a heritage trail and exhibitions at Dunedin Public Art Gallery, Dunedin Public Libraries, Hocken Collections Uare Taoka o Hākena, Olveston, Toitū Otago Settlers Museum, Tūhura Otago Museum and University of Otago Library Special Collections.
