About this Event
Join us at Girl Scout DreamLab to try your hand at learning how to make your clothing last longer or add a bit of personality! Kids and caregivers will learn and be able to practice:
- Simple hand mending stiches
- Darning
- Patching
- And the Japanese art of sashiko embroidery
Sashiko is a Japanese style of stitching that originated in the Edo period and is used to reinforce or decorate fabric and clothing. The word "sashiko" literally translates to "little stabs" and refers to the simple running stitch that creates repeating patterns.
The steps in the workshop may fulfill a part of a patch, badge, or journey relating to leaning about different cultures, sustainability, or art.
Participants are welcome to bring a piece of clothing they would like to try to mend, but practice fabric will also be available. If you are practicing on your own damaged garment and are new to this skill, be sure you are comfortable with it not turning out as you envision.
You don't have to be a girl or a Girl Scout to join the fun! This event is offered for 4th Graders (Girl Scout Juniors) and up. Both kids and caregivers can register for this workshop. This is not a drop off event. Caregivers only need to register if they are participating.
