Reimagined Sounds: Lyric Transformations for the FluteWith Jooyeon Chang, Piano
CSU faculty artists Ysmael Reyes, flute, and Jooyeon Chang, piano, explore how flutists and composers have reimagined vocal, orchestral, and instrumental voices into a unique lyrical language for the flute and reinterpret music across eras. William Grant Still’s Three Songs, adapted from vocal originals, reveals the instrument’s lyrical depth and expressive warmth. Karg-Elert’s Symphonische Canzone draws on Romantic color and drama, while Jörg Widmann’s Petite Suite for Flute Solo distills material from his flute concerto into a series of vivid, characterful miniatures. The recital concludes with Gabriel Fauré’s Violin Sonata in A Major, reimagined for flute and piano continuing a tradition of adapting expressive works for the instrument in periods when few composers wrote for it directly.
