Curated Visit (hybrid)
By invitation, the RGME visits the varied collections of Dr. Steven Lomazow, at home in West Orange, New Jersey, on Saturday 16 November 2024. We offer the visit in hybrid format.
The In-person version will assemble at the Lomazow home at 11:00 am EST (GMT-). After the luncheon repast as welcome for in-person attendees, the Online Version will begin at 12:30 pm EST (GMT-5) and continue through the afternoon until 5:00 pm, with some 'breakout rooms' as visitors explore different rooms of the collection and examine materials on different shelve.
In an introduction to his collection, Dr. Lomazow will share highlights, impulses, and discoveries in the course of his collecting for over more than fifty years, and then describe how his varied collections are arranged in groups and by sizes, each set out alphabetically. With this guide, we might explore the collections, with the opportunity to examine selected materials and ask questions for further disussion and enrichment of knowledge.
Option for Virtual Visit
For those unable to journey to attend in person, we offer a Zoom option to join the visit virtually, starting with Dr. Lomazow's Introduction at 12:30 for 1:00 pm. The hybrid format will allow attendees unable to travel to engage with the discussions, ask questions, and offer feedback.
This curated virtual visit forms a complement to our Episodes of the RGME online series "The Research Group Speaks". Like them, it might extend for one-and-one-half hours. For the hybrid format, it might extend by request for a longer span.
Hybrd Visit for Access In-Person and Virtually
In these ways, the visit to Dr. Lomazow's collection, in person with a virtual component, can allow the wider audience of the Research Group on Manuscript Evidence, both based in Princeton and located elsewhere, might contribute to shaping the event as a significant occasion in the history of the RGME as it continues to pursue the exploration of original materials as resources for study, teaching, and learing, both in person and at a distance through interconnected means.
We are grateful for the opportunity in this landmark Anniversary Year of our Section 501(c)(3) organization, by the generous invitation of Dr. Steven Lomazow, to extend our tradition of visiting special collections, with special masterclasses, workshops, and interviews, into the realms of the history of American magazines and other traditions of creativity in the arts and written word.
The Collector and His Collections
Assembled over fifty years, they include an extraordinary collection of American magazines, pulp fiction, and other materials. Some of them have been displayed and published, including at The Grolier Club in 2020 (with a catalogue and continuing virtual exhibition) and in other volumes. We have the opportunity to see these original works and others in context and to engage in conversation with them and their erudite collector.
