Contemporary singer-songwriter Violet Hirst tours small Aotearoa venues this summer. An evening of layered vocals, familiar melodies and unique songwriting supported by Madeleine Dove. Born and raised in Tāhuna Queenstown, Violet's musical journey began the day she was born: opening night of her mother's musical Kitchens. Her songs and live performance embody the theatrics and ballads that surrounded her childhood. Gaining comparisons to Aldous Harding and Julia Jacklin, Hirst’s songs combine hypnotic vocal melodies with meditative rhythms and poignant lyrics from a young woman. After touring the USA as a support musician for Flying Nun rockers Office Dog, Hirst is back on the road to share her own new works.
Her debut album Donegal was recorded in Central Otago with De Stevens (Roundhead Studios, Marlin's Dreaming) and Reuben Scott (Saltwater Criminals, Molly Payton). The album received a Student Radio nomination for Best Album, charting on both SRN and Radioscope charts. Followed with a nationwide tour and sold-out shows, Hirst is excited to return to the road for the first time since then. Joined by Madeleine Dove (vocals, keys) the duo will perform new contemporary meditations and vocal experiments.
“(Donegal) is brimming with the confidence of an artist fully inhabiting their own sound; wistful and slightly heartbroken, but unencumbered by expectation." - RNZ
“Evident to everyone present was how special that rainy night was, how flawless, nuanced and emotive Hirst’s singing and songwriting. The real deal, with the crowd standing in the rain outside afterwards, not ready to leave, raving.” - NZ Musician
