About this Event
When someone says “caricature,” you might think of street artists who often draw humorous portraits. You might also think of illustrations in newspapers. These are used to comment on the politics of the day.
And when you see these caricatures of politicians or celebrities, it’s often instantly recognisable — even when their features are wildly exaggerated. So how does a caricaturist capture someone’s likeness while bending reality so far?
In this lecture, writer, director, and artist Charlie Faulks explores how caricatures are built: breaking down the mechanics of likeness, exaggeration, and visual shorthand. Through examples of well-known politicians and celebrities alongside their caricature counterparts, Charlie reveals how artists decide what to exaggerate — and why it works. Watch Charlie demonstrate these ideas in real time as he draws caricatures live!
Charlie’s original animated seven-part series, BLOKE OF THE APOCALYPSE, has amassed over 436,000 views, after being picked up by New Zealand On Air as part of its $5 million investment to engage young New Zealanders with local content.
Doors open at 6.30 pm so be sure to come on time, grab some refreshments and snacks, and secure your seat!
