Our first screening of the year!
Violent Playground (1958)
Social drama directed by Basil Dearden and starring Stanley Baker, Anne Heywood, and David McCallum. Set in post-war Liverpool, the film follows police sergeant Jack Truman, reassigned as a juvenile liaison officer amid growing concern over youth crime and arson. His work brings him into conflict with Johnnie Murphy, a troubled gang leader, and his sister Cathie. Exploring themes of juvenile delinquency, authority, and social neglect, the film reflects 1950s anxieties about rebellious youth and urban decay, building to a tense and tragic climax.
We will be joined by local historian Jamie Yates who will give a talk discussing the film before the screening starts!
