With its praxis of Instant Composition Conducting, the VIENNA IMPROVISERS ORCHESTRA since 2004, engages in a special discourse of unwritten experimental composition and complex improvised music for large ensembles.
Instant Composition Conducting, which is based on Butch Morris' method of hand-sign-conducting Conduction, was developed by art.dir. and ad hoc conductor Michael Fischer into a comprehensive praxis:
1. absolute and exclusive ad hoc creation on the part of both the ensemble and the conductor, 2. no rehearsals, only a short try-out of the hand-signs before the concert begins, 3. the staging is set according to instrument groups, 4. few, approx. 20, hand-signs are used, which 5. are used sparingly, 6. the instant compositions have narrative progressions of 35-50 minutes, and 7. each concert features a curated, new ensemble constellation and usually includes at least one new musician.
The VIO brings together outstanding musicians - within always gender-parity orientated line-ups - from the Viennese and international scenes of free improvisation, contemporary music and jazz.
The VIO was a guest at the legendary Moers-Festival where its concert was acclaimed with standing ovations lasting minutes, at the new music festival Wien Modern twice, at the Music Unlimited Festival for Improvised Music, at the Artacts Festival for Improvised Music and Jazz, at the Porgy & Bess Vienna, the Brut Wien, the Belvedere21 - Museum of Contemporay Art Vienna, the Künstlerhaus Wien, the Vienna Art Week Festival, at AIL - Applied Interdisciplinary Lab/cur. by the Univ. of Applied Arts Vienna a.m.o.
MICHAEL FISCHER, ad hoc conductor and art. dir./VIO, works on the speech immanence of sounds and their dramatic evidence on the tenor saxophone/the feedback-saxophone he has developed since 1999, on Soundscapes/fixed media compositions with authors of experimental poetry. Since the 90s collaborations with Irene Schweizer, William Parker, John Edwards, Denis Charles, Marc Sanders, Peter Kowald, Burton Greene a.m.o.. As an instant composition conductor he has worked with international improvisation orchestras and temporary large ensembles for festivals and guest-lectures/universities in Europe, Canada, the USA and Japan, f.e. at the Johns Hopkins Univ. Maryland/USA, Univ. of California Irvine, Wien Modern, Festival Internat. de Improvisación Madrid, Renzo Piano Building/IT, Deriva Jazz Festival/ES, Traumzeitfestival/GER, Creative Music Festival/JAP, Univ. of Montenegro Music Academy, Janacek Academy of Music & Perf. Arts/CZ, Cricoteka Krakow, Univ. for Music & Perf. Arts Vienna, Bruckner Univ. Linz, Univ. of Architecture Vaduz/LI a.m.o.
The VIENNA IMPROVISERS ORCHESTRA was founded by Michael Fischer in 2004; it is one of the earliest and continuously working impovisation orchestras dedicated exclusively to radical ad hoc conducted music for large ensemble.
