Vinylsessions – 10th December 2025
As our amazing 2025 events draw to close, we feature Supertramp’s “feelgood” album Breakfast in America from 1979. As the decade was ending it had been quite a musical journey – Glam Rock to Punk Rock & Disco, Margaret Thatcher had just taken residence in No 10, we looked forward to the 80s with optimism – rightly or wrongly!
We spin an original 1979 pressing of the sixth studio album by the Supertramp released on 16 March 1979 on the A&M label. Recorded from May to December 1978 at the Village Recorder in Los Angeles, engineered for the punchy late 70s sound It spawned three UK hit singles: Breakfast in America (UK No.9) The Logical Song (UK No. 7), Goodbye Stranger (UK No. 57), The classic and emotive Take the Long Way Home became a staple for radio, still often played on Absolute Radio to date! Our resident music expert, Graham Chalmers, gives us the full back story before playback.
The Halcyon days of Hi-Fi were also changing as new production techniques brought hi-fidelity in reach of the masses, LPs still ruled and cassettes while the go to for in car entertainment had the benefit of chrome and metal options together with more affordable hardware meant higher quality was available – recording the top 40 on FM was such a ritual!
The audio menu is a real iconic treat - In the mid-70s Pioneer moved production from Japan to Taiwan in order to overcome tax issues, fresh from this transition sees the launch of the game changing SX-XX50 range of receivers, we enjoy a substantial 100w SX750 from the upper mid-section of the range paired with the usual choice of Pioneer’s PL115 turntable fitted with the go to Shure M75ED cartridge. You would pick this up from Comet etc for around £340 in 77/78 (That’s £3,400 in today’s money!). Then you needed the speakers!
The fun starts at 7.30pm with our usual satirical chat and Graham’s introduction, we spin side 1 and take a break for around 15 mins before dropping the needle again for side 2 – maybe some bonus tracks and even our “Vinyl from Heaven or Hell” feature along with our raffle. Every penny raised goes directly to our nominated project at Harrogate Hospital Special Care Baby Unit.
Places are just £7 (plus Eventbrite card/booking fee) or drop us an email to [email protected] to reserve a place and pay £7 on the door.
