Take it from us that ‘Caught Up’ is a 53 minute, 7-second journey that’s well worth taking. Because what we’re dealing with here is a concept record in the classic sense – a continuous song cycle charting the interior monologue of a woman engaged in an adulterous affair with a married man on side A, and the wronged wife’s account of the story on Side B. It begins with clandestine yearnings and stolen glances between furtive lovers, and ends with a heart-rending flashback to early courtship and the promise of a better future that never came to pass. Musically, it’s anchored by the Swampers – house band of the legendary R&B recording studio, Muscle Shoals, who infuse these songs with an irresistible strut and swagger that’s the perfect foil for Jackson’s vocals and her howls of frustration, wry life lessons and bruised laments for a marriage damaged beyond recovery. Her efforts with this album to convey pure expressions of both sheer carnal lust and desolate betrayal from a woman’s perspective was taboo-shattering stuff in 1974, and 52 years later still retains a force and power that’s all its own.

After a short break, we'll follow the album with our usual ‘Dead Wax’ session. Bring along a vinyl disc of your choice and hear a track from it played through the Arts Centre PA. This can be anything you like, for any reason – the more ‘out there’ the better.
