Villa Silvestri Rivaldi sorse alla metà del '500 ai piedi della Velia, affacciata sul Colosseo e sui Fori, come residenza di Eurialo Silvestri, importante prelato della corte pontificia di Paolo III Farnese (1534-49). Dal 1577 al 1660 fu abitata da membri di potenti famiglie quali i Medici, i Colonna, i Margotti, i Pio di Savoia, per poi diventare un convento e un’importante fabbrica tessile di Roma, grazie alla donazione di Ascanio Rivaldi. Dopo l’Unità d’Italia fu una scuola e negli anni ’70-’80 del Novecento divenne il “convento occupato”.
Oggi finalmente al suo interno, grazie al progetto di ICR e della Regione Lazio, con il contributo dell’ex Segretariato Regionale del MiC, è possibile ammirare, con la formula del “restauro aperto” e della conservazione partecipata, resti di strutture di epoca romana; affreschi cinquecenteschi occultati per secoli; fontane e ninfei seicenteschi; testimonianze di archeologia preindustriale. Un racconto avvincente che dischiude una prospettiva inedita sul patrimonio culturale e sulla storia della città di Roma.

Villa Silvestri Rivaldi was built in the mid-sixteenth century at the foot of the Velian Hill, overlooking the Colosseum and the Forum. It was the splendid townhouse of Eurialo Silvestri, an important prelate of the papal court of Paul III Farnese (1534-49). From 1577 to 1660 the complex changed hands between other powerful families, including the Medici, Colonna, Margotti and Pio di Savoia before being bought by Ascanio Rivaldi. On his death he bequeathed it to the church. As a convent it became home to one of Rome’s most important textile factories. After the unification of Italy the building became a school. During the politically turbulent1970s and ‘80s the structure became the “occupied convent”. Today, thanks to a project by the ICR and the Lazio Region, with the contribution of the former Regional Secretariat of the MiC, it is finally possible to admire, through the "open restoration" and participatory conservation approach, the remains of Roman-era structures; sixteenth-century frescoes hidden for centuries; seventeenth-century fountains and nymphaeums; and evidence of pre-industrial archaeology. A compelling story that offers a new perspective on the cultural heritage and history of the city of Rome.
