About this Event
Now is the time for UC Berkeley to expand its commitment to racial justice, yet they have decided to close the Institute for the Study of Societal Issues (ISSI), home to many scholars and students of color.
Please join us for a peaceful, family-friendly, physically-distanced protest; we will adhere to all city, county, and state public health regulations. Please:
- Wear a mask
- Stay at least six feet away from people who are not part of your household
We will gather to create an altar to our family, social movement, and academic ancestors and have brief remarks about the need to save ISSI to help the university move towards a more just future.
Featuring the Vigil Danza Mexica from In Xochitl In Cuicatl and Teokalli in support of the existence and resistance of ISSI.
Around 4pm we will walk a few blocks to California Hall to symbolically present the petition to the university administration.
If you would like, please bring:
- Something to place on the altar, like an offering or a photo. You can pick up your item after the event, but don’t leave anything valuable or irreplaceable!
- A sign, expressing your wishes for social justice futures at Cal or beyond
Restrooms:
We are not allowed to use our building (due to public health guidelines), so those restrooms will not be open. There are public restrooms in People’s Park, one block away, or else you can ask in one of the nearby cafes or restaurants (many of them are open for take-out).

If you can't attend in person, please participate in our virtual vigil!
Thank you in advance for your support!
