Description:
Change is the name of the game for therapy and change is hard. Although clients may be asking for a change when they come to therapy there is typically some ambivalence. While it is easy to write off a client as unmotivated there are things that a therapist can do or not do that can either enhance the motivation to change or limit the client’s motivation to change. This CE will help participants understand some of these.
Learning Objectives:
1. Participants will be aware of the stages of change as identified in the transtheoretical model.
2. Given a case study participants will be able to identify the stage of change illustrated and some specific techniques for helping that person.
3. Participants will be able to identify what is meant by OARS
4. Given a case study participants will be able to craft an open-ended question, an affirmation, two reflections and a summary statement.
5. Participants will be able to identify at least one way they can use these principles with someone on their case load.
