About Stephen...
Stephen Bennett has been playing guitar for nearly six decades. He’s won awards, including the 2024 International Finger Style Guitar Championship. A long time ago (1987) in a galaxy far, far away (Winfield, Kansas), he also won the National Flatpicking Guitar Championship, and is the only person to have won both of those awards.
Stephen has released 37 albums, 33 of them on his own, the rest
in collaboration with others, and has also appeared on various
compilations (1997’s Masters Of The Acoustic Guitar on the Narada label being one example). His most recent album (released in August 2025) is entitled Still Got It. As is usually the case, work on his next album is underway.
Stephen has played a significant role in the renaissance of the
harp guitar and is the founder of the annual Harp Guitar Gathering™. The 24th HGG will take place in November 2026 in Lawrence, Kansas.
He’s played music around the United States and in many other countries too, touring on his own, and with other notable musicians - Lulu Reinhardt, Itamar Erez, Andy McKee, and Tommy Emmanuel, among many others. Alex Lifeson (of Rush), joined Stephen on his most recent album, playing on a tune entitled Mr. Zelenskyy, in honor of the Ukrainian president, as well as on a track Stephen composed in honor of former Senator Mitt Romney entitled Who Knew A Man Of Honor Would Be So Hard To Find, recently released as a single.
Stephen’s favorite quote ever about his playing? The Toronto
Fingerstyle Guitar Association dubbed him the “Jedi Master of
Fingerstyle Guitar”. While he would never make such an assessment, occasionally he isn’t completely unhappy with his playing.
Born in Oregon, Stephen was raised in the Hudson Valley of NY, and lived in Virginia for 30 + years. After moving to Connecticut in 2010, he and his wife Nancy moved a few years ago to the beautiful northwest corner of the state, alongside the Housatonic River.
