History of the Manor
A stone Tudor manor once stood proudly on this site, built by the Powell family. In 1720, it passed into the hands of the Hope family and was later inherited by Hannah Jones of Trefonnen, whose family owned the land where Llandrindod Wells Mineral Springs were discovered in the 1730s.
In 1787, the estate was inherited by Thomas Jones, a renowned Welsh landscape painter. During the early 1800s, the manor passed to his daughter and between 1832–1839, it was extensively remodeled into the grand Tudorbethan-style house that still stands today.
By 1863, Clara Thomas, granddaughter of Thomas Jones’s widow, became the last of the gentry to reside here and carried out further enhancements. Following her death in 1914, the estate was divided and later restored by the Evan-Thomas family, transforming it into a shooting estate.
In 1958, the house was auctioned and purchased by Margaret Carrel, who owned it until 1978. During the 1980s, the Cook family operated it as a country hotel for over 20 years.
👻 Paranormal Activity 👻
Locals believe the manor is still haunted by Clara Thomas herself, with much of the activity focused around the main staircase. Reports include:
* A chef witnessing crockery flying off shelves and the appearance of a dark shadowy figure
* The sound of a trolley being wheeled upstairs
* A baby crying in empty rooms
* Heavy footsteps pacing the halls and stairs
* Items moving by unseen hands
