DESCRIPTION
"When painting issues directly from the mind, obstructions naturally recede. To have the true method is to be free from obstructions; to have obstructions is to lack genuine method.
The method is produced in the act of painting and obstructions diminish."
Shitao
Philosophy of painting by Shih-Tʻao. Translated by E. J. Coleman
Vertigo invites us to explore the painter's intuitive mind, where perspectives and different planes emerge in harmony beyond the visible. Hui Sun presents a vision, a collection of impressions that both reveal and conceal; an intimate space where brutality is softened by a loving scent.
His paintings possess an element of vertigo, as the vanishing point is neither clear nor logical, and he also plays with disruptive elements such as impossible ladders whose origin and end remain unknown.
Vertigo here is the gateway to the sublime, and as in Hölderlin's famous verse from Patmos, one can sense that where danger lurks, so too does the saving power. East and West converge in the individual's quest for genuine, unobstructed self-expression.
It is also a celebration of Maltese and Chinese scenery, where, through Hui Sun's gaze, one can dwell in the beauty of everyday life, be swept away by unfolding stories, or admire domestic and natural elements.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Hui Sun. Born in 1985, in Datong city, province Shanxi, China. He studied at Yunnan Art University and gained a master’s Degree (2009 – 2012). His graduation work, History Wheel-I, was collected by the Art Museum of Yunnan Art University.
He had numerous exhibitions in China, where he got the third prize of the Yunnan Young Artists Exhibition in 2012 and the third prize of the Yunnan Oil Painting Society Art Exhibition in 2020.
He worked at Yunnan Art University as an art teacher (2012–2021). Nowadays, he lives in Malta with his wife, also an artist, and they have a studio in Swieqi. He is also a fellow member of the Malta Society of Arts.
In 2020, he started creating a series of works called Silent Space. He puts different themes and contents in one painting; in this way, he expresses a kind of conflict between people. He tries to get the sense of a cold, restless state and, at the same time, a warm space full of love.
Furthermore, he combines Eastern/Western art using oil paint to establish the structure of the space, creating a special perspective.
