Long before the rise of empires, in an age when Elves and Dwarfs waged ruinous war across the surface of the world, a discovery was made beneath the Dragonback Mountains. Hidden deep within the Badlands lay a vortex of raw magic — ancient, volatile, and terrible in its potential. Its nature was so grave that it ended a war. Elves and Dwarfs, enemies beyond reconciliation, swore silence and worked together to see the vortex destroyed.
They failed.
Unable to unmake it, they instead built the Everfort: a vast and secret bastion raised above the vortex to seal it away. Its greatest defence was the Veil, a powerful enchantment that hid the fortress from sight and smothered the vortex’s magical presence. Those who discovered the truth remained behind, becoming the Everfort’s unseen guardians. For centuries, they held their vigil, destroying any force that strayed too close — until the world forgot both fortress and purpose.
Then the earth itself rebelled.
A cataclysmic earthquake tore through the Badlands. The Veil was shattered. The Everfort was revealed for the first time in over a thousand years — and the vortex beneath it bled magic into the world once more. Sorcerers, seers, prophets, and madmen all felt its call.
Armies marched.
The first to seize the Everfort were the Forces of Chaos. Breaking through its ancient defences, they took control of the fortress and began to meddle with the vortex itself, twisting its energies in ways no mortal race was ever meant to attempt.
