Join WMARA at Wild Chestnut on May 3rd as we enjoy a delicious vegan meal and welcome the amazing pattrice jones, VINE Sanctuary co-founder, as our guest speaker! The kitchen opens at 12:00, followed by a presentation and discussion afterwards led by pattrice at 12:30'ish. All are invited!
Sending Wild Chestnut a tremendous thanks for reopening their kitchen on a Sunday for this event and to pattrice for traveling from afar for this event! pattrice/VINE and WMARA will also be tabling and marching at Hampshire Pride Day the day before, May 2nd! Feel free to join us there too.
In this engaging presentation, "Beyond the Barnyard: How Animal Farming Harms Humans and the Environment", pattrice will share stories from VINE Sanctuary to illustrate the many ways that the exploitation of animals reflects and compounds social and environmental injustices such as ableism, sexism, homophobia, racism, and climate change. VINE is an LGBTQ-led animal sanctuary in Springfield, VT.
In addition to coordinating the sanctuary, pattrice jones is an ecofeminist scholar and writer whose work has been internationally recognized. A winner of a 2024 “Spirit of the AD” Award from the VT Governor’s Committee on the Employment of People with Disabilities that was recently featured on Vermont Public for its work with former fighting roosters, VINE cares for more than 500 animals while also working for social and environmental justice. A recent VINE Press book, Bird’s-Eye Views, collects dozens of essays relevant to the subject of this event.
From climate change to persistent social problems like discrimination, domestic violence, and genocide, the habits of human supremacy make it harder for people to analyze and solve the problems that people have created. The flip side of every stereotype about animals is a stereotype about humans. Those myths make it harder to diagnose and solve social problems.
Learn all about the different species that coexist with one another at VINE Sanctuary and listen to unexpected and illuminating stories that show how animals–human and non-human–can build lives together.
