What this course provides for food teachers

The aim of the day is to introduce you to our new KS4 Vegan High Level Skills training package for GCSE and KS4 vocational courses and also experience our KS3 Affordable Food Lessons for All resources.

The day will be filled with practical activities which explore and give an insight into both resource and CPD packages. Once you have a taster, we know that you will want to use these in your schemes of work.

A s part of your fee you will receive FULL unlimited access to both resources via the on-line training portal.

Y our course includes:

  • A full day of training and a chance to try out the recipes and resources, learning new practical skills
  • Affordable Food Lessons for All - complete resource pack and further training
  • V egan High Level Skills - complete resource pack and further training.

Who is this course for?

• For teachers who teach and support food activities at Key Stage 3 and prepare KS4 students for GCSE Food Preparation and Nutrition and or Vocational courses such as L1-2 Hospitality and Catering, or NCFE Food ad Cookery.

• For teachers who are new to food without food knowledge wishing to gain essential knowledge and improve their competence in teaching food

It will help those teachers who looking to:

  1. Ensure that vegan candidates gain maximum marks in exams,
  2. Enable all candidates to perform well in NEA tasks that are based on vegan or plant based food choices,
  3. Revisit their KS3 and KS4 schemes of work to be more inclusive of vegan students and meet current requirements for those with protected characteristics,
  4. Reduce the cost of their KS3 scheme of work to make lessons affordable for all families/ school budgets
  5. Introduce affordable recipes that are healthy, cover all KS3 skills, popular with students, fit 60 min lessons or less and support families with economical dishes.

What will I gain from joining the 'DUO' Event?

Affordable Foods for All (KS3)
  • Gain an insight into our “Affordable Foods for All” resource and CPD and know how to use it
  • An opportunity to road test the recipes

You will be able to use the training, presentations, tips, recipes and costings to support your food and nutrition work in school. Take the information provided and ‘make it your own’ to support your school and pupil needs.

All presentations, recipes and costing templates are editable.

• shows how 24 recipes can be planned and cooked for less than £18 over three-years, each in 60 minutes or less, and take into account progression and food group coverage

• comprises training and resources - online training, a guide, 24 tested and costed recipes, presentations, costing spreadsheets, charts, letters and an action planner

• provides advice and practical solutions for addressing cost in food lessons

• demonstrates how healthy, tasty dishes can be prepared and cooked, being mindful of cost – while also providing key skills

• can be accessed at any time (and is available for access in the future), plus it provides lots of relevant resources which can be used directly in the classroom, saving you time

• gives pros and cons for ingredient provision, as well as costings to share with senior colleagues

• is editable, so you can make it your own – using it in your planning and teaching

• supports your professional development and training – a certificate of completion is provided

• is provided by the Food Teachers Centre – a trusted source of information, support and training nationally – actively used by over 8,600 teachers.

  • Essentials - what do the exam boards mean by High Level skills, vegan school policy and legal requirements

Our Vegan High Skills is with collaboration with Leiths Academy, who have provided us with amazing professional videos demonstrating each high skill along with explanations on which aspects are high skill and how to present to a professional level.

Each video is supported with an explainer which covers

• Adapting the recipe to meet the needs of a vegan

9.00 Coffee and welcome, introductions

9.30 Start

Session 1 – Affordable Foods for all.

An introduction to the Affordable Foods for all package and what it has to offer


Session 2- Road testing a wide range of recipes from the package that are suitable for KS3.

P ractical, discussion and how to use these recipes and resource


Session 3- Vegan High Level Skills

Opportunity to try out our vegan high level skills recipes in collaboration with Leiths Academy with a focus on professional plating styles.


Focus:

• Creating aquafaba pavlovas

• High level knife skills - fruit

• Creating vegan, caramel sauce

• Caramel shards

• Plating


Session 4 – A deeper look into what the package has to offer


Focus:

Aiming High: School Policy and high-level results

• A look at developing a school food policy for food lessons

• An overview of exam board defined high skills and review of recipes


Managing inclusive lessons for vegans

• How one school incorporates vegan dishes into their curriculum

• How to convert recipes, change and swap ingredients successfully

Fiona Mather

I have been a Teacher of Food & Head of Dept for 25 years and have been involved in many projects offered by the Food Teachers Centre over the years. I have experience in Primary and Secondary teacher training and have led on the Core SCITT course and would love to share my experience with teachers coming into this exciting profession. My aim is to support teachers and build their confidence in teaching practical food sessions.
