About this event
For centuries, Ukrainian women gathered after sundown.
Vechornytsi — an ancient tradition of women's gatherings, where older women and younger ones came together around a long table. Hands stayed busy shaping dough, and in that rhythm something passed between them. Knowledge. Stories. The kind of wisdom that only travels from hand to hand, from generation to generation.
At Zhiva Authentica, we honour this tradition and bring it to life here in Bridport — with real food, live music, and the warmth of a shared table.
The evening
You arrive at 7pm to a candlelit table and the sound of a live cellist playing the music of Mykola Lysenko — Ukraine's greatest classical composer, who spent his life preserving folk melodies so they would never be forgotten.
Together we make three kinds of varenyky entirely by hand. No machines, no shortcuts — just flour, water, and the technique passed down through Ukrainian kitchens for generations. While our hands work, we talk. The conversation that happens over dough is different from any other conversation.
When the dumplings are ready, we sit down together and eat everything we made. The cellist plays. Stories are told about the tradition of Vechornytsi — where it comes from, what it meant for women to have a space entirely their own, and why it still matters.
The evening ends when it ends.
The menu
On arrival Traditional Ukrainian horilka —fruit vodka, clean and honest (£10 optional add-on) Or a soft welcome drink included
Hands-on — we make together Three kinds of varenyky from scratch: — Potato and porcini (classic) — Sour cherry/blueberry (sweet, traditional) — Sautéed cabbage with caramelised onion (hearty, earthy)
Dough: boiled method — silky, forgiving, traditional
Shared table dinner Everything we made, served together at the long table Accompanied by smetana, fresh herbs, and seasonal additions from local West Dorset producers
To take home The full recipe — dough and all three fillings
Live music
A cellist plays throughout the dinner — compositions by Mykola Lysenko (1842–1912), Ukraine's most celebrated classical composer. His music was written for evenings exactly like this: people gathered, food on the table, something alive in the room.
This is not background music. It is a living presence at the table.
The space
We gather on the second floor of Human Nature, on Bridport's central street — an authentic, intimate space with a long table that seats our group together. Warm, unhurried, and unlike anywhere else in West Dorset.
