Following our acclaimed 2023 production of Hugh the Drover, The New London Opera Group returns to the operas of Ralph Vaughan Williams with a new concert production of The Poisoned Kiss.Vengeful sorcerer Dipsacus, plotting an elaborate revenge on his unfaithful old flame Empress Persicaria, raises his own daughter Tormentilla as an unwitting assassin - armed with a deadly poisonous kiss. But his plans are thrown into chaos when Tormentilla falls in love with her target, the Empress's son - the gallant Prince Amaryllus. With a dose of magic and a cast of hapless hobgoblins, meddling mediums and scheming servants, this spellbinding comic opera brings the composer’s luscious melodies and energetic ensemble numbers to an enchanting, madcap fantasy world reminiscent of Mozart’s The Magic Flute.
Ralph Vaughan Williams (1872–1958) is one of Britain’s best-loved composers, celebrated for his richly evocative and quintessentially English music, drawing inspiration from English folk songs, hymns, and the pastoral beauty of the countryside. Among his most revered compositions are The Lark Ascending, and his Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis, which showcase his mastery of orchestral texture. Vaughan Williams also wrote symphonies, operas, choral works, and film scores, leaving a legacy that continues to resonate with audiences worldwide.
