The Vancouver Paleontogical Society will be joining the Vancouver Island Paleontological Society on a field trip to a Lower Jurassic fossil locality near Sayward, Vancouver Island.Here you a hard but fossiliferous siltstone contains diverse fauna of bivalves, brachiopods, gastropods and ammonites (mainly Paltechioceras harbledownense) from the Lower Jurassic (Upper Sinemurian), Harbledown formation, Bonanza group (Harbledownense zone).
For VanPS members, travel to this site is requires taking BC ferries (www.bcferries.ca) from the lower mainland. Then driving about 2 to 2 1/2 hours drive from Nanaimo to the meeting point. Then another hour to on logging roads to the site. A vehicle with 4WD / AWD and higher ground clearance is recommeded on the logging road. You could car pool with others from the meeting point as well.
Level of difficulty - Easy / Moderate (the site is remote but next to the logging road. There are no public bathrooms available nearby. Not recommended for toddlers or very young children. No pets due to bears / cougars in the area.
Tools recommended - Minimum 3-4 lb sledge hammers as the rock is extremely hard, flat masonry chisel to split slabs up. Safety googles, gloves, newspaper, aluminum foil or bubble wrap and masking or painter's tape.
Clothing - please wear approriate clothing for the weather on the day. Weather can be variable within a day.
Footwear - Runners or Hiking boots
Please note we will be out of cellular service range. Please bring food and water with you. There are no bathroom facilities at the sites.
Please note, this is a members only event. You'll need to be a member of the societies of the BCPA (https://bcfossils.ca/) such as Vancouver Paleontogical Society, VicPS, VIPMS, or VIPS to attend this event.
