Singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Vanessa Collier releases her sixth album, Do It My Own Way, on September 13 via Phenix Fire Records. Recorded live on analog gear, the album draws inspiration from classic Memphis soul in the tradition of Stax and Hi Records, with warm grooves, horn-driven arrangements, and deeply soulful vocals.
The album’s second single, “Wild As a Rainstorm,” offers an empowering message to women and outsiders, earning a spot on Spotify’s official Retro Soul playlist and featuring legendary Hi Records organist Rev. Charles Hodges. Other standouts include the funk-fueled opener “Elbow Grease,” the noir-tinged “Take Me Back,” gospel tribute “Rosetta” honoring Sister Rosetta Tharpe, and the anthemic title track, a statement on independence and perseverance in the music industry.
Collier wrote, produced, and arranged the album, performing guitars, alto and tenor saxophone, flute, and all lead and background vocals. A twelve-time Blues Music Award nominee and four-time winner—including Contemporary Blues Female Artist of the Year and B.B. King Entertainer of the Year—Collier made her Chicago Blues Festival debut this year and continues to be recognized as a powerful voice shaping the future of soul and blues.
