SongBird North launches its 29th season in Vancouver on SEPTEMBER 24th with producer Shari Ulrich hosting DAWN PEMBERTON, LEEROY STAGGER & SUZIE UNGERLEIDER on the Roundhouse stage. For almost three decades now, SongBird North has been beloved by audiences for the rich variety of songwriting styles that are on display at each show, and the magical alchemy that happens when talented artists take turns sharing songs and stories about their work. It’s a one-of-a-kind evening of live music – an opportunity to get up close and personal with the music and the artists who create and perform it.

SongBird North: Where Writers Sing and Tell is produced by Shari Ulrich for the Songwriters Association of Canada. The SAC gratefully acknowledges the support of the SOCAN Foundation. For more information on the SAC’s mandate, activities and membership programs, please visit www.songwriters.ca.

BACKGROUND: Since 1995, SongBird North (formerly Bluebird North) has been a mainstay in Vancouver for songwriters from across the continent, as a bi-monthly showcase that features four talented singer/songwriters of widely varying styles, on stage together, taking turns playing their original songs and sharing stories with one another and the audience about their work. While the series was started in Toronto and has toured nationally, Vancouver remains its longest-standing host city. www.songwriters.ca

Note, we have indeed raised our ticket prices by $5 to even begin to level up to the lowest current benchmark for ticket prices. We trust that you will agree that the evening with such a high caliber of great writers is worth it. Thank you for your years of support fo this unique event.

ABOUT THE WRITERS:

DAWN PEMBERTON

Vancouver soul dynamo Dawn Pemberton has a deep musical foundation rooted in tradition. Dawn spent her formative years surrounded by a family of multi-instrumentalists and developed a true love of music as a young girl. In addition to regularly collaborating on the projects of her peers and having an educated background in jazz voice and piano, Dawn is a talented and passionate songwriter in her own right. Dawn crafts her music with a sense of adventure, quirkiness, and serious groove, shaping it into her own unique and dynamic package.

LEEROY STAGGER

Leeroy started out as a full-fledged punk rocker, before getting turned on to roots music. He released his first solo EP in 2002 and after a couple of decades and many releases both as a songwriter and a producer, he is currently putting out his 13th full recording of original songs.

That liminal space of the wee hours of a new day is what led to the title of his new album - 3 AM Revelations—and there could be no better title. For it’s in that sacred and moonlit window that brought forth his strongest, most passionate songwriting to date. In these musical revelations, having returned to his hometown in Victoria with his young family where he recorded the project in his new home studio, we hear gratitude, struggle, rebel rousing, balladry, compassion, and humour. Similar to like-minded songwriters as Jason Isbell and Steve Earle, Leeroy Stagger uses his long-term sobriety for muse, muscle, and music. Take the recovery song “These Days”, which still yearns for a greater meaning, even after 16 years of sobriety. Leeroy is a highly regarded songwriter and producer and has achieved legendary status in this country for his work.
