VAMPIRE HUNTER D is a prime example of old-school cult-classic 80’s Japanimation, and a title that has been requested by Rio Theatre fans for years. So get ready for it – beautifully restored for its 40th anniversary! This mythical anime is set in a post-nuclear holocaust dystopia, when the Earth is ruled by the supernatural and vampires, mutants and demons, “slither through a world of darkness” (in the words of the film’s opening introduction). Starring Kaneto Shiozawa, Michie Tomizawa, Seizô Katô, Satoko Kifuji, Kazuyuki Sogabe, Motomu Kiyokawa.

VAMPIRE HUNTER D (Toyoo Ashida, 1985 / 90 mins / 18A / Japanese with English subtitles) The film follows the story of a young lady after she is bitten by an evil vampire in medieval Romania, and asks for the help of a mysterious stranger known only as “D” to K*ll the vampire, thus sparing her a similar fate. Battling gothic creatures along the way, the mystery of who “D” really is soon becomes apparent, to himself and the viewer.
