Vale La Pena: My Journey in Doing Work That Matters is a must-attend event for all interested in the servingness of institutions of higher education! Join us at the Arizona State University Tempe Campus, Union Stage with Dr. Sarah Rodriguez, author of Latin* Students in Engineering: An Intentional Focus on a Growing Population, as she shares what she’s learned on her research and service journey. This presentation will explore the challenges that Latin* students face in their journeys to become engineers and computer scientists as well as the assets that they bring with them from their homes and communities. She will share implications for institutional Latin* STEM servingness as well as consejos (advice) to inspire you to harness your own power and be a source of transformation for your communities by doing work that matters. Sarah L. Rodriguez, Ph.D. (she/her/hers) is an Associate Professor of Engineering Education at Virginia Tech. Dr. Rodriguez is one of the nation’s leading experts on Latina/o/x/e STEM students and was co-editor of the landmark book, Latin* Students in Engineering: An Intentional Focus on a Growing Population. She concentrates on asking urgent questions about systemic inequities that marginalized communities experience as they transition to and through their engineering and computing experiences. She received her PhD in Higher Education Leadership and a certificate in Mexican American Studies from The University of Texas at Austin and holds a master's degree in College Student Personnel from The University of Tennessee. She was a community college transfer student and a Bill and Melinda Gates Millennium Scholar (GMS) born and raised in rural East Texas with family roots in the Rio Grande Valley.
