For nearly four decades, Valdy has been woven into the fabric of Canadian folk and pop music. A beloved singer, guitarist, and storyteller, he’s known for capturing life’s small but meaningful moments through his songs.
Best remembered for his hit Play Me a Rock and Roll Song—a wry reflection on performing at the 1968 Aldergrove Rock Festival—Valdy has released 13 albums, selling nearly half a million copies. His accolades include two Juno Awards (Folk Singer of the Year and Folk Entertainer of the Year), seven Juno nominations, and four Gold albums.
One of Canada’s most influential songwriters, Valdy’s A Good Song was recorded by the legendary Quincy Jones under the title Just a Man, with Jones himself on vocals. Play Me a Rock and Roll Song has also been covered by several artists, including John Kay of Steppenwolf.
Valdy’s music has taken him across the globe—from Denmark to Australia—and earned him repeat invitations to the renowned Kerrville Festival in Texas. He’s appeared on Canada AM, Open Mike with Mike Bullard, and even acted in The Beachcombers. Warm, witty, and endlessly engaging, Valdy continues to connect with audiences everywhere, sharing the heart and humour that have made him a true Canadian icon.
