About Vaisakhi
Vaisakhi holds deep spiritual significance for Sikhs, followers of a monotheistic religion that originated in 15th-century Punjab. It is celebrated on the first day of the month of Vaisakh according to the Punjabi calendar. While Vaisakhi also marks the spring harvest and has long been celebrated by Punjabi farmers with community gatherings and festivities, its religious significance for Sikhs commemorates the historic founding of the Khalsa in 1699.
On this day in 1699, at Anandpur Sahib in Punjab, the Tenth Sikh Master, Guru Gobind Singh, formalized the Sikh initiation ceremony and established the Khalsa. He selected the Panj Pyare (the Five Beloved Ones), who would lead the community and administer initiation rites.
The Guru conferred upon all male Sikhs the title “Singh” (Lion) and upon all female Sikhs the title “Kaur” (Princess). The formation of the Khalsa—a sovereign brotherhood of saint-soldiers with a distinct identity—was meant to uphold righteousness, freedom, and the dignity of humankind. The term “Khalsa,” meaning “Pure” and also “Sovereign,” refers to the community of initiated Sikhs.
Vaisakhi Celebration in Los Angeles
In Los Angeles, the Vaisakhi celebration is coordinated by the Sikh community of Southern California in cooperation with many gurdwaras; a gurdwara is a Sikh place of worship and community center. The event takes place at the Los Angeles Convention Center in downtown LA. Sikhs gather to celebrate the birth anniversary of the Khalsa and express their devotion through the singing of spiritual hymns, known as “Kirtan.”
The traditional Sikh martial art, “Gatka,” is performed to reflect the community’s spirit and heritage. A Sikh parade, or “Nagar Kirtan,” is also held, led by the Five Beloved Ones and presided over by the Sikh scripture, Sri Guru Granth Sahib. A community kitchen serves free meals, known as “Langar,” to all visitors. This tradition of Langar was established by the First Sikh Master, Guru Nanak, to uphold the principle of equality.
All are welcome to celebrate Vaisakhi with the Sikh community. Greet Sikhs with “Sat Sri Akal,” a common salutation that means “God’s name is eternal and true.”
