About this Event

Virginia Hands & Voices invites you to our first FREE educational workshop for families of children who are deaf and hard of hearing in Hampton Roads. Join us at Bayside Area Library in Virginia Beach on Saturday, March 21 from 10am - 12pm for content and conversation you won't want to miss!

Our goal of the workshop is to empower parents with the knowledge they need to successfully navigate the special education system and IEP process in Virginia. Our presentation will be broken out into 3 sessions with time for Q&A between.

Session 1 - Nuts and Bolts of an IEP

Session 2 - Don't Wait - Advocate!

Session 3 - IEP Tips & Tricks

Lizzy Allen, former Educator of the Deaf and Interpreter, will share her take-aways from her 50 year career in Deaf Education.

Paige Motley, ASL educational interpreter turned Teacher of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing for Virginia Beach Public Schools, will discuss sections of the IEP, what parents can bring and contribute to meetings, and what information is most helpful to the team, including real examples.

Teri Urban, Vice Chair of Virginia Hands & Voices and parent of a deaf teenager, will discuss advocacy and the importance of your child attending their IEP meetings from a young age. She will also highlight guidelines, legislation and resources that are specific to Virginia that every parent should have saved to their desktop and in their back pocket!

This event is limited to 30 participants and will not be recorded or live-streamed. If you require an ASL interpreter or other accommodation, please indicate your request while registering. We are grateful for the support from Virginia Relay and the Virginia Department for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing to help make this event possible, and accessible.

While this event is free, registration is required and space is limited. Be sure to reserve your spot today!
