Berkeley Plantation, built in 1726, is one of the oldest and most storied estates in Virginia. Home to the influential Harrison family, including two U.S. presidents, this grand Georgian mansion has witnessed significant moments in American history, from the early colonial period to the Civil War.
However, its history is marred by tragedy—a lightning strike in 1744 claimed the lives of William Harrison IV and his two daughters, a loss that left a lingering mark on the mansion. The property also served as a Union hospital during the Civil War, where many soldiers took their last breath.
These events have contributed to the plantation’s reputation as a hub of paranormal activity, with reports of ghostly apparitions and unexplained phenomena.

Visitors have encountered the spirit of William Harrison IV, who is known to playfully interact with the living, moving objects and making his presence felt throughout the mansion.
His daughter’s ghost is often seen cradling her infant brother by the window where the tragic lightning strike occurred, and the window itself has been known to close on its own.
The attic echoes with the sound of heavy footsteps, while along the riverbank, the apparition of a Civil War soldier and his young drummer boy companion can sometimes be seen, still patrolling the grounds as if their duties are not yet complete.
