What is the project?

Using Our Voices is a civic engagement initiative designed to help young people understand Australian democracy and feel confident using their voice within it. The project focuses on practical skills, not just theory, so participants leave knowing how to take action on issues they care about.

From understanding how government works to learning how to engage politicians and advocate online, this project turns civic knowledge into real-world impact.

What will you do?

This interactive workshop includes hands-on activities such as:

Meeting Your MP

Learn how to prepare for and participate in a meeting with a Member of Parliament, share your story and advocate for change.

Power Mapping

Understand who holds influence in different systems and how to approach decision-makers strategically.

Social Media for Civic Impact

Explore how platforms like Instagram, X (Twitter) and TikTok can be used to raise awareness, mobilise others and support social justice causes.

Workshops are youth-led, practical and focused on real-life civic participation.

Why get involved?

This is a chance to:

  • Learn how to speak up about issues that matter to you
  • Build confidence, leadership and advocacy skills
  • Connect with other young people in your community
  • Take a break from busy routines with free food, good company and meaningful conversations

Optional Research Element

Participants will have the option to take part in a research component exploring how young people view their role and influence in Australian democracy. Those who choose to participate will reflect on the question:

“How much voice do you believe you have in Australian democracy?”

This optional research aims to:

  • Identify gaps in civic understanding and participation among young people
  • Measure the impact of the workshops
  • Inform educators, policymakers and community leaders
  • Contribute to research by the Whitlam Institute and the Centre for Western Sydney

Participation in the research is completely voluntary. Young people who choose to take part in the research component will receive a $50 Prezee voucher as a thank you for their time. Whether or not participants join the research, everyone will still be able to fully participate in the workshop and activities.
Why Western Sydney?

Western Sydney is one of Australia’s most diverse and fastest-growing regions, yet many young people have not been given the tools or opportunities to engage in democracy. Using Our Voices centres young people in Western Sydney, amplifying voices often overlooked and building pathways for equity, inclusion and long-term social change.
