About this Event
Urban trees face a wide range of stressors, from poor planting practices and unsuitable species choices to soil compaction and invasive pests.
Attendees will learn how to
- better identify trees,
- combat invasive threats,
- select sustainable species alternatives, and
- assess site limitations that hinder long-term tree health.
Who should attend this workshop?
π³ This workshop is tailored for arborists, urban foresters, landscape professionals, and municipal staff who manage and maintain trees in developed areas.
π½οΈ A BBQ lunch (pulled pork, ribs, pulled chicken, sides) is included with registration. Please indicate any dietary restrictions or preferences no later than January 15, 2026.

Tree ID Challenges
Host: George Dickert
Info: Accurate tree identification is the foundation of good tree management, but itβs not always as simple as it seems. In this session, George Dickert walks attendees through common challenges in tree ID, including hybrid cultivars, seasonal variations, and misleading leaf traits. Participants will sharpen their diagnostic skills using real-world examples from urban settings.

Invasive Species and Urban Trees
Host: Dr. Dave Coyle
Info: Invasive insects, diseases, and plants threaten the health of urban forests across the Southeast. Dr. Dave Coyle delivers an engaging, research-based overview of the most pressing invasive species currently affecting trees in the region, including emerging threats on the horizon. Learn what to watch for, how to respond, and how to communicate these issues with clients and the public.

Plant This, Not That: Common Problem Tree Alternatives
Host: Briana Naumuk
Info: Some trees may be widely planted but poorly suited for urban environments, leading to long-term maintenance headaches. In this session, Briana Namuak highlights common "problem trees" and introduces resilient, site-appropriate alternatives. Attendees will leave with practical substitution ideas to improve urban canopy health and reduce future conflicts with infrastructure.

Soils and Site Constraints: Hidden Enemies of Urban Trees
Host: Nicole Goodman
Info: Poor soil conditions and site design flaws are among the most underdiagnosed contributors to tree decline in urban settings. Nicole Goodman dives deep into the impacts of compaction, drainage, limited rooting volume, and construction damage. This session provides practical guidance on evaluating soil conditions, interpreting soil reports, and planning for better tree establishment and longevity.
