Topic: HINCare: Intelligent Timebanking for Volunteering Services

Speaker: HKU Professor, Reynold Cheng, Associate Dean for Student Enrichment, HKU

Abstract: In many metropolitan cities, there is a lack of manpower in social care. In Hong Kong SAR, for example, the elderly care homes report a 70% shortage of employees. To alleviate these issues, our HKU STAR (Social Technology And Research) Lab studied the use of timebanking to encourage citizens to participate in volunteering services. Particularly, we have developed HINCare, a timebanking platform that provides volunteering and cultivating mutual-help culture in the community. In HINCare, a volunteer can earn time credits based on his number of hours of services, and the time credits can be used to exchange for other services, goods, and tickets to events. HINCare employs the HIN (Heterogeneous Information Network) to recommend helpers to elders or other service recipients, and is now supporting 14 NGOs and 7,000 users. This project has received two HKICT Awards, two Asia Smart App Awards, and a HKU Faculty Knowledge Exchange Award.
