The Mira Mar Plaza is the largest remaining boom era commercial structure in Sarasota. It contributes to the quaint walkable downtown vibe that anchors our sense of place. The Mira Mar Plaza has also been at risk of demolish as the city continues to grow and be rezoned. The Plaza NEEDS OUR HELP.The Mira Mar Plaza was built in record time in 1922, at the start of ‘Florida Fever’ tourist boom. The largest apartment building that Sarasota had yet seen, with a hotel and auditorium constructed on site shortly after, Mira Mar signaled to the world that this piece of paradise had risen to ‘resort status’.
Until recently Mira Mar Plaza was home to several beloved establishments including Caragiuio's Italian Restaurant. The plaza is in need of major restoration and the support of community is critical. As Urban Sketchers, we can help shed light on the project and keep it in front of the community.
Meet Up
We will meet at 10:30am across the street at Waffle Monkey Cafe & Coffee Shop for a short meet & greet and then you can disperse to sketch your favorite scene(s) of the area. We'll then meet back up in the same location to throw down and share our sketches. For anyone interested, hang out and enjoy lunch at Waffle Monkey and get to know your fellow sketchers.
Parking is available in several ramps in the area and on the street.
Ramps are located around the corner on Mira Mar Court, and two blocks North on Palm in the Palm Ramp.
