Resilience, in the context of global urban resilience and major city management, has been defined as the capacity of urban systems, communities and individuals to withstand, adapt to and recover from various shocks and stresses.

In recent years, we have witnessed a dramatic shift in the nature of crises—be they natural hazards, economic disruptions, public health emergencies, security threats, and other unforeseen challenges. Therefore, living in a complex and interconnected world, it is crucial to realise the importance of preparedness and adaptability in crisis management. It has revealed vulnerabilities in our systems and highlighted the need for integrated approaches that encompass not only immediate response but also long-term recovery and resilience building.

Climate change has played a pivotal role in shaping the urban environment to a great extent. The frequent occurrence of severe extreme weather events is alarming. It is time to realise that action needs to be taken in order to deal with this drastic phenomenon causing devastating consequences to the humanity. The recent catastrophic floods in Austria, the devastating tropical cyclone Helene that caused widespread destruction and fatalities across the Southeaster United States, and the wildfires that burn down acres of green forests, all remind us the need to bring change.

For that reason, it is vital to create a holistic approach that not only integrates disaster risk reduction, but also sustainable development, social inclusion and proactive planning to build better, safer, and more resilient cities.

Building community resilience is a collective effort that requires the active participation of all stakeholders. By fostering social connections, promoting sustainable practices, and enhancing preparedness, communities can better navigate challenges and emerge stronger in the face of adversity. Ultimately, we all agree that prevention is better than cure.
