About this Event

Unveiling Norwich: Finding Love and Sufism in Unexpected Places

This is the premier showing of a debut ethnographic film from anthropologist Dr. Olivia Barnett-Nagshineh, usually an ethnographer of food systems and economies in Papua New Guinea, this film offers an insight into the people who have been part of the Murabitun movement of Sheikh Abdalqadir al-Sufi in her hometown of Norwich, UK. Formally known as Ian Dallas and part of the Scottish landed gentry, Sheikh Abdalqadir established a mosque and a community of Sufi Muslims in Norwich which spread to become a global and international religious and spiritual movement with various political and economic ideologies. This ethnographic film gives an insight into the people who became part of the Sheikh's community and how they think about Islam, love, the heart, care, community and connection. With a camera involved from the beginning, Barnett-Naghshineh meets members of the Ihsan mosque and films life history interviews and micro-phenomenology interviews while also using more traditional ethnographic methods.
