A writing workshop exploring storytelling through objects
About this Event

During the Alternative Fashion Week programming at Reference Point, Lore Archive collaborates with madly awake to facilitate a writing workshop exploring storytelling through objects. Through a variety of methods and prompts varying from stream of consciousness writing to word collage, the workshop invites you to meet the objects in a play between fiction and reality, senses and memory.
is an artist-led material culture archive founded and run by Sophie Turner. Made up of historical garments, objects and artefacts, the archive works on multidisciplinary research projects at the intersection of art and design as well as collaborations with other creative practitioners to keep reinterpreting and telling new stories with this material.

This workshop is part of Lore Archive’s Unpacking the Collection series. Unpacking the Collection is a research-led project rooted in a physical garment and object archive. Rather than presenting the archive as a static resource, the project treats each object as something to be activated — materially, historically, and emotionally. The workshop encourages explorations from multiple angles – investigating the construction, wear, repair, material origin, cultural context and lived use through close handling, visual scanning, discussion, writing, or collective observation. A material curiosity is encouraged, allowing artists to be led down unexpected paths. The emphasis is on process rather than outcome, and on knowledge that emerges through encounter rather than explanation.

The project sits between archive, workshop, and conversation. It’s interested in how garments hold memory, labour, and embodied experience — and in how shared looking and handling can open up new ways of thinking about fashion, history, and material culture beyond display or consumption.

Lore Archive is available for design rental appointments, consultancy services and student workshops on request - [email protected]

is a publishing imprint founded by artist & writer molly maltman as an extension of her practice. moving across photography, poetry, curation, writing and archival research, madly awake explores publishing as an artistic practice as well as a form of memory holding.
