UNMASKED: A Sober Purim of Joy

A 14Y Selah Community Gathering, in partnership with JACS of the Jewish Board

UNMASKED is a recovery-informed, sober-friendly Purim celebration that invites joy, connection, and presence without alcohol. Rooted in Jewish tradition and shaped by lived experience, this evening offers a different way to celebrate Purim: one that centers honesty, embodiment, and communal joy.

The night begins with a recreation of the Purim story, grounding us in a story of hiddenness and revelation, courage and turning things inside out. From there, we’ll hear a story from a community member sharing their recovery wisdom, experience, strength, and hope.

The evening then opens into an ecstatic dance experience, using movement, music, and breath as our ritual of celebration. Instead of drinking, we move. Instead of escaping, we stay present. Joy becomes something we experience together, in our bodies, with awareness and care.

You are welcome to join for one part of the evening or stay for the full experience. Participation is always optional. Movement is optional. Stillness and witnessing are welcome.

UNMASKED is for people in recovery, people who love someone in recovery, those who are sober-curious, and anyone seeking a joyful, alcohol-free Purim experience. Jewish literacy is not required just openness and curiosity.

This gathering is presented by 14Y Selah, an addiction and recovery-informed Jewish community, in partnership with JACS of the Jewish Board, an organization supporting individuals and families affected by addiction within a Jewish framework.

Purim asks us to loosen our masks.

Recovery teaches us that joy doesn’t require escape.
