About this Event
Monday, November 4 and Tuesday, November 5 from 5:00 pm - 9:00 pm
According to NIDA, 11% of those presenting for care at the Veteran’s Administration are diagnosed with substance use disorder, a much higher rate than the general population. Rates of Chronic Homelessness, as defined by Congress, are twice as high among veterans than the general population. Despite decades of efforts from the VA and extensive media coverage of drug use and housing insecurity among veterans, substance use continues to rise among veterans and active military.
Participants of this course will be able to:
- Compare rates of SUD and Mental Health in Veteran and Civilian population
- Understand the internal and external barriers Veterans face when seeking treatment
- Demonstrate an understanding PTSD, transference and counter-transference as it applies to Veterans
- Identify and describe resources for Veterans, including those who do not have access to the Veterans Administration
- Understand the effects of military culture on both addiction and recovery
- Demonstrate an ability to effectively engage with Veterans using motivational interviewing and Trauma Informed Care
