Southern Vermont for Palestine and Jewish Voice for Peace Vermont-New Hampshire welcome author and policy analyst Phyllis Bennis to Brattleboro on Wednesday, April 9. Bennis will speak to the current situation and the role of the U.S. in Israel/Palestine and present her new book, Understanding Palestine and Israel.
Bennis is a fellow of the Institute for Policy Studies (IPS) in Washington, DC, where she focuses on the Middle East, particularly Palestinian rights, U.S. militarism, and the UN.
She will be introduced by her IPS colleague and local author, Chuck Collins. The talk, followed by a Q&A, will be at the Latchis Theater, 50 Main St., Brattleboro, starting at 6:30 p.m. Admission is free and all are welcome. Participants are asked to RSVP in advance (and reserve a copy of the book, if desired) at https://actionnetwork.org/events/phyllis-bennis-talk.
With a legacy of activism and decades of expertise, Bennis will discuss her latest book, which unpacks the history that led to this moment and examines conditions in Gaza before October 7, 2023. The book addresses the roots of Palestinian resilience and the global movement for ceasefire and justice, including South Africa's initiative at the World Court.
Bennis is an international adviser to Jewish Voice for Peace, a fellow of the Transnational Institute in Amsterdam, and was twice short-listed to become the UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights in the Occupied Palestinian Territory. She appears regularly on Al Jazeera, CNN, NPR, Democracy Now!, MSNBC, and other national and international media.
She has written and edited 11 books, including her popular Understanding the Palestinian-Israeli Conflict, updated in 2019. She is also the author of Before & After: U.S. Foreign Policy and the War on Terror and Challenging Empire: How People, Governments & the UN Defy U.S. Power.
Understanding Palestine and Israel was published in February by Interlink Publishing in Northampton, Mass.
