Course Description:

Most mental health professionals will agree that encountering ethical dilemmas is very common within their mental health practice. Generally, the best defense against an ethical dilemma is a good offense. By looking out for foreseeable conflicts and discussing them frankly with colleagues and clients, practitioners can evade the misunderstandings, hurt feelings, and sticky situations that lead to hearings before ethics boards, lawsuits, loss of license or professional membership, or even more dire consequences. This workshop will equip practitioners with practical tools and tips to help them avert common ethical dilemmas. The workshop will focus on the most common ethical dilemmas often faced in clinical practice. The format will consist of instruction and lively discussion.

Learning Objectives:

1. Participants will build on their current clinical experience in identifying and managing ethical dilemmas.

2. Participants will understand the complexities of boundaries and dual relationships.

3. Participants will understand the difference between abandonment and termination.

4. Participants will be able to describe five types of unethical mental health dilemmas and how to address them.
