Super Tuscans are wines that rewrote the rules of Tuscany—crafted outside strict DOC regulations, often blending international grape varieties with Sangiovese to create bold, expressive styles that redefined Italian winemaking.
This guided tasting explores how these wineries push creative boundaries in their blends, crafting high-quality wines beyond the constraints of strict regulations.
Featured Wines:
- Tenuta Moraia Perpiero Toscana IGT 2018 — To pay tribute to Pierangelo Piccini, Perpiero (translated as “For Piero”) is crafted from a blend of 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Sangiovese and 20% Cabernet Franc. It brings together the firm structure of Cabernet with the freshness of Sangiovese, resulting in a wine of elegance and lasting depth.
- La Massa Giorgio Primo IGT 2015 — The flagship wine or “Grand Vin,” of Tenuta La Massa, Giorgio is named by owner Giampaolo Motta in honour of his grandfather and as a tribute to his first son. The wine is a blend of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot and 5% Petit Verdot, reflecting both heritage and a modern Tuscan expression.
- Tenuta Moraia Apricaia Toscana IGT 2020 — Apricaia, from the Latin “apricus” meaning sunny & open and the suffix “ -aia” meaning abundance, vineyards enjoy perfect exposure to the sun and sea breeze. The blend of 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc, offers ripe blackberry and plum with hints of spice, cocoa and Mediterranean herbs, supported by silky tannins and a smooth, elegant finish.
Each tasting includes a 40ml pour of every featured wine.
