About this Event
Hello Wine Lovers!
Did you know that San Diego County is home to over 100 wineries? And that there is a burgeoning wine country within a 30-minute drive from your front door?
If not, let's change that.
Join us at Uncorked: A San Diego Wine Guide Celebration for the release of Edible San Diego 's 80th issue: a Special Edition Local Wine Guide highlighting San Diego County wine country.
We’ll be at in Escondido on December 4 from 5 to 8pm to mingle and learn about local winemaking, with winemakers, tastings, bites, and more.
BACKSTORY
San Diego is recognized as the birthplace of California wines and home to three distinct American Viticultural Areas (AVAs): San Luis Rey, Ramona Valley, and San Pasqual Valley, in the approval process. AVAs are federally designated regions recognized for their unique geographical attributes, which make them ideal for grape growing and winemaking. Much of San Diego County is also part of the South Coast AVA, which spans the coastline from Santa Barbara to Ventura, down through Temecula, and our backyards all the way to the border.
Over the years, we’ve come to appreciate the growing potential local wine offers to the global wine world. Many of the region’s wineries are family businesses producing at boutique scale, operating out of tasting rooms and wine clubs. They are less likely to be featured on wine lists or available at local retailers, but the wine is actually excitingly good. We only need to start looking for it and asking for it.
THE GUIDE
Whether you’re experienced or a novice, this first-of-its-kind guide is designed for local wine enthusiasts with a range of levels of interest and knowledge in mind. In it, you’ll find stories about the history of San Diego’s wine industry, vibrant visuals and imagery assembled to showcase the beauty of viticultural practices happening here, and consider the land and the people behind each glass. There’s a custom crossword, comic strip, grape guide—and the pièce de résistance—an illustrated countywide map and tasting room directory.
With this special edition, Edible San Diego’s editors, collaborators, contributors, and more recognize that the local wine industry is a significant part of our agricultural community and the local worth celebrating.
