Looking to grow something beyond the usual backyard favorites? This class highlights a diverse selection of uncommon edible plants that can succeed in the low-desert conditions of the greater Phoenix area. We’ll explore a wide range of unique options, including distinctive citrus like yuzu, finger lime, and Buddha’s hand; desert-adapted trees such as moringa, mesquite, and curry leaf; and productive shrubs like goji berry and Barbados cherry. You’ll also learn about edible cacti and succulents—including prickly pear, agaves, and aloe—as well as lesser-known herbs like epazote, shiso, saffron, and Cuban oregano.
The focus will be on how these plants grow in our climate, including site selection, planting considerations, seasonal care, and what to expect as they mature. We’ll also touch on which plants are best suited for different spaces, from in-ground plantings to containers.
Whether you’re looking to try something new or expand what’s possible in your desert garden, this class offers practical guidance and plenty of ideas to take home.
No registration required. Seating is limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis in our air-conditioned classroom.
